Max Beerbohm first travelled to Italy in the Autumn of 1906 and his impressions of the visit were published in the Daily Mail in the November and December of that year. It was the Venetian pieces—those with which Max was happiest—which formed the basis of 'A Stranger in Venice'. The essay was included in A Variety of Things, the tenth volume of the collected works in 1928 but it has never before been issued as a separate volume. Included with the text is a previously unpublished drawing of Beerbohm by Sir William Rothenstein."
