Printing Details

Framed, mounted and glazed. The frame measures 43.5 × 32.5cm, the map measures 31 × 20cm.

This is an original map from Herman Moll's 1724 book A New Description of England and Wales. It shows the county of Devon, from Combmartin in the north to Salcomb (sic) Haven in the south, and from North Petherwin in the west to Axminster in the east. The map has subtle later hand-colouring depicting the county boundary and the smaller divisions (Hundreds) within. The map is bordered with illustrations of archaeological finds to the right margin (Andromache found at the Bath, Saxon coin struck at Exeter), and with two illustrations of the Edystone (Eddystone) Lighthouse, one showing Winstanley's original wooden structure that was destroyed in 1703, the second showing John Rudyard's construction as it looked in 1713.

The map has been framed very well in distressed gilt, with cream mount. Distinct plate mark visible to edges.

Condition

The frame and mount are in very good condition. The map remains very good too, with some light foxing and tanning to the margins.
