First edition thus. Hardback, rebound in half-leather by C J Sawyer (of Grafton Street, London), with five raised bands and simple gilt titling to spine. Top edge gilt, fore-edge untrimmed. 21.5 × 15.5cm, 310pp.
An attractive edition of the memoirs of Ninon de Lenclos, author and patron of the arts, famed courtesan and philosopher; her Paris salon attracted France's leading politicians and writers for both mental and physical stimulation. Although once confined to a nunnery by Anne of Austria, de Lenclos' attained a level of respectability unusual for courtesans, while her philosophy and patronage led to friendships with, among many, Moliére and Voltaire.
This copy is in very good condition. There is light surface abrasion to the joints and the pages have light spotted foxing but the book remains strong readable condition.
