Canal Adventures by Moonlight
George Smith's canal writings, including a 6 day trip from Leicester to London
First edition. Hardback, bound in the original green decorative cloth. 19.5 × 12.5cm, vi + 250pp.
George Smith was a social reformer and campaigned to improve the living conditions of the large number of people who lived and worked on board canal boats. These are some of his canal writings including an account of a six-day monkey boat journey from London to Leicester, which describes the living conditions of boatmen and families, and the lives of the canal children.
A rare book but a poor copy. The binding is rubbed and faded to the spine. The title page and contents are detached and the inner binding pulled. The book remains in readable condition but is a little delicate. Institution stamp to ffep (Young Women's Christian Association of Harrogate).
