This copy was owned by Edward Cheney of Badger Hall in Shropshire, and has his bookplate to the front pastedown and partial signature to title page (trimmed when the book was rebound). Cheney (1803–1884) was a collector and patron of the arts who amassed an important collection of Venetian paintings and drawings, a patron of Thomas Hartley Cromek, and whose significant collection was sold at Sotheby's in 1885.
This copy contains 528 of de la Rochefoucauld's maxims, reflections and pithy aphorisms originally published in 1665.
Condition
Good condition for age. The vellum is darkened all over and there is some loss to the titling and black strip to the spine. Light foxing throughout but the book remaining in perfectly good readable condition.
