Second edition, second impression. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22.5 × 14.5cm, 91pp.

The French astronomer's study of Mars. From the dustwrapper, "The planet Mars is one of our nearest neighbours in the solar system, if we except the Moon. 'The visitor from Mars' is one of the stock characters in fiction and drama. Could Mars be inhabited? What is the truth about the so-called Martian Canals? What are the physical conditions in Mars? What is the weather like? What are the possible explanations of the changes on its surface observed through terrestrial telescopes? De Vaucouleurs brilliantly answers these questions, in so far as they are, at present, answerable."

The book itself is in very good condition with an inoffensive previous owner's name to the front pastedown. The dustwrapper is chipped to the spine ends and darkened to the spine but otherwise sound and now within a protective sleeve.
