Helen, A Tale
An early edition (1838) of Maria Edgeworth's late novel
First single volume edition. Hardback, bound in brown cloth with gilt titling to spine. 16.5 × 10.5cm, 455pp.
First published in 1834 and a late novel from Maris Edgeworth, Helen tells the story of a young orphan, Helen Stanley, whose guardian, Dean Stanley, has squandered his fortune and left Helen without means of support. She is forced to take up residence with the local vicar, whose wife is astonished that none of the Stanleys' aristocratic friends have offered a refuge to her.
A rather dull copy, with foxing to the illustrated title page and one page of text (163/164) working loose, but remaining perfectly readable.
