Edward Lear, The Life of a Wanderer (Signed copy)
Signed by Vivien Noakes to Professor Morton Cohen
First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. 23 × 15.5cm, 359pp.
This copy comes from the library of Professor Morton Cohen, the eminent Lewis Carroll and Victorian literature scholar and has been signed and dedicated by Vivien Noakes to him to the title page. Morton Cohen has signed the ffep, and loosely inserted is a handwritten letter from the author commenting on Lear and Alice.
An innovator in art and literature, he was born both out of time and out of place, finding the narrowness and provincialism of life in England stultifying and travelling constantly in order to find a climate and a culture that suited him. The story of Lear's life is both deeply poignant and hugely uplifting.
The book is in very good condition, the dustwrapper is a little rubbed and bumped, especially to the head of the spine but has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.
