First edition, hardback bound in full leather with contrasting leather title label, five raised bands and gilt decoration to spine, Cheltenham College crest in gilt to upper board, page edges marbled. 17.5 × 13.5cm, 244pp (lacking publisher's adverts).
Full title: The Scouring of the White Horse; or, The Long Vacation Ramble of a London Clerk.
Thomas Hughes' eccentric second novel which explores the history and class-system of England while describing the renovation of the chalk-cut horse on the hill at Uffington. This first edition has been delightfully illustrated by Richard Doyle, with a double page title page and smaller illustrations within the text.
A very attractive copy. There is some fading around the spine and the leather suffers some light surface abrasions. Slight rubbing to the joints. The pages are lightly and sporadically foxed throughout but the inner binding is tight. Cheltenham College label to front pastedown.
